WEEKLY: Dems Prep Party Candidates

In an effort to fill nearly 30 open seats on the Democratic State Central Committee and numerous other positions on parish executive committees, party advocates are conducting seminars to plug those vacancies as soon as possible. One such seminar, via conference call, was held Wednesday evening and led by the Louisiana Democratic Party and Emerge Louisiana.

All involved with the recruitment process view it as the start of something bigger — candidate development. “We’re working with our partners to build our farm team,” said Stephen Handwerk, the state party’s executive director.

Emerge Louisiana, which is actively recruiting and supporting female Democratic candidates for larger races across the state, is likewise giving attention to election districts where Democrats tend to underperform. “We need to get Democrats there in the habit of voting again,” said Melaine Oubre, Emerge’s executive director, without volunteering which election districts are being targeted.

It’s an objective that the state party shares. “We want to field a good Democrat in every race,” Handwerk added.
