POD: New Kids on the Block

In this week’s episode of the LaPOLITICS Report, we talk to members of the Louisiana Republican Party about the future of the GOP and the state of Louisiana government.

We’re joined by two newly elected kids on the block: LAGOP Chairman Louis Gurvich and Executive Director Andrew Bautsch, both of whom have been on the job for less than a month. They tell us they are recruiting minority and female candidates, as well as candidates who are younger than traditionally seen in the GOP — something they say they haven’t focused on in the past. We may also see more conservative candidates looking to replace incumbent and term-limited officials in the 2019 elections, and in the governor’s race. The 2015 gubernatorial race was the most expensive in state history, but Bautsch and Gurvich expect that record will be shattered in 2019. They also want to surpass one million party members in the state by 2020.

“Generally speaking, we want folks who are going to be part of our message for smaller government, lower taxes and more individual freedom to live your life as you choose,” Gurvich said. “We fully expect to be the largest party in Louisiana in the next few years. And that’s going to have ramifications with the elections.”

Plus, we start the episode off with a Democrat, taking a look back at the career of former U.S. Sen. and current D.C. lobbyist John Breaux. You get to listen to him dish in on an “embarrassing” run-in he had with late President Richard Nixon during the Watergate scandal, when Breaux was a freshman in Congress.
